Getting Your Child Ready for Their First Dental Exam

Posted on 2/8/2021 by Jeannie Molato, DDS
Getting Your Child Ready for Their First Dental ExamTaking your child to the dentist for the first time is stressful, especially since you have no idea how they would react to things initially. However, regular dental checkups are crucial for your child's oral health, and thus, the appointment with us is not dispensable. However, if you follow the right steps for prepping your child mentally and physically for their appointment at our office, then the visit will turn out to be much simpler and even enjoyable for your child than what you might have expected.

Make Your Child Feel Excited About The Visit

Children, when first told about visiting a dentist, are expected to either react negatively or be highly curious about it, depending upon their notion of dentists. Make sure that you do not scare them; instead, talk to them about who a dentist is and what we do, and explain why visiting us is important. Spark their curiosity about what will happen at our office and mention the positive aspects of seeing us. It is possible that your child will be separated from you during the examination, so therefore, it would be a good idea to bring along your child's favorite toy to keep them company.

Give Them a Mock Dental Exam at Home

It is a good idea to give your child a general idea of what will transpire during the exam by demonstrating it physically. You can also take your child along during your own dental appointments. However, the best option would be to tag along during one of your friends' children's dental appointments. If possible, schedule a morning appointment to ensure that your child is energized for the visit.

It is always a good idea to take your child to a pediatric dentist for their first visit. Contact our office to schedule a visit with one of our friendly and knowledgeable pediatric dentists today!
