Mouthguards and Night Guards
Simi Hills, CA

A lot of people grind their teeth when they are stressed out or in pain. However, it becomes a problem when you can't let go of the habit even while you're sleeping. The involuntary clenching of the teeth during sleep is called bruxism, and it doesn't just adversely affect your mouth but your overall health. What's even worse is that most people are unaware they suffer from this condition.

Causes of Teeth Grinding

Here are some factors that may cause you to grind your teeth:
•  Depression and anxiety.
•  Poor bite.
•  Neurodegenerative disorders like Parkinson's disease.
•  Genetics.
•  Substance abuse.
•  Excessive coffee intake.
•  Use of antidepressants.
•  Obstructive sleep apnea.

Consequences of Teeth Grinding

Below are some of the most common consequences for grinding your teeth:
•  Premature erosion of enamel.
•  Yellowing teeth.
•  Fractured teeth.
•  Migraines and facial pain.
•  TMJ or jaw joint disorder.
•  Gum recessions.

Custom-Made Night Mouthguards

Night mouthguards are widely available in pharmacies and dental clinics. Over-the-counter mouthguards are one of the cheapest varieties; however, dental experts strongly recommend not using stock mouthguards to treat bruxism since they are very uncomfortable, ill-fitting, and do not effectively protect your jaw and teeth from pain and damage.

However, at Simi Hills Dental, we provide you with custom-made night mouthguards that are specifically designed to fit your mouth and treat your unique dental issue. These mouthguards are created using a mold, which is then sent to a dental lab. Custom-fitted mouthguards are made from a type of hard plastic which is extremely durable. They can be fitted on either the top teeth or the bottom teeth or both, depending on how comfortable they are for the patient. These mouthguards are very effective in distributing the force of your jaw clenching so that you do not suffer from teeth damage or jaw strain.

Custom-made night mouthguards can be a bit costly but are very long-lasting. They also offer you the best protection and most comfort compared to over-the-counter mouthguards.

How to Take Care of Your Night Mouthguards

Although quite effective in managing the symptoms of bruxism, night mouthguards can quickly accumulate plaque-causing bacteria. Therefore, it is very imperative that you take good care of your mouthguard.

When you remove your mouthguard in the morning, make sure to rinse it immediately in cool to mildly-warm water to get rid of any plaque buildup or debris. Then gently scrub the mouthguard with a soft-bristled brush. Do not use abrasive toothpaste as it can cause scratches on the plastic surface and wear down the device before its time.

Once your mouthguard is clean, allow it time to dry. Bacteria love damp places and a wet device will quickly accumulate pathogens. Therefore, before putting the mouthguard back in its case, allow it to sit out for 15-20 minutes so that it becomes completely dry.

Make sure to put your device back in its case to protect from dust and bacteria. Make sure you disinfect your case regularly too.

To deep clean your mouthguard, use a denture cleaning solution or make a solution of antibacterial mouth rinse and water. Submerge your mouthguard inside the solution for half an hour, then take it out and rinse it. Don't leave your mouthguard soaking for too long as that can damage it.

By making sure your mouthguard remains clean, you ensure your device lasts longer. If you think you have bruxism, call us at (805) 306-0200, and we will assess your condition and make a custom-fitted mouthguard for you.
